History, production, and growth
The Kenco Coffee company was formerly known as ‘The Kenyan Coffee Company.’
It was established in 1923 by a cooperative of white Kenyan coffee growers who brought their coffees from Kenya over to the UK. The company name was later shortened to ‘Kenco’ in 1962.
They sold coffee next to John Gardiner – a food merchant, then offered catering services for events. After World War II, Tom Kelly, who was working for John, advised him to buy The Kenyan coffee company. John Gardiner did and put Kelly in charge. Kelly expanded the business to selling cakes, espresso machines. They were thriving so much that about 11 other branches were opened, which were often regarded as the first branded high street coffee shops in the UK.
Jacob Douwe Egberts currently own it. But before being owned by Jacob, it had been previously owned by Mondelēz International, General Foods, and Premier Foods. Kenco Coffee Company partnered with Tassimo, also owned by Jacob Douwe Egberts, to produce Tassimo Kenco Coffee pods compatible with the coffee-making machine.
In 2018, Kenco coffee redesigned the package of its range of products to celebrate the 15% ground and roast coffee blended into its product. According to Jacob Douwe Egberts, the new design reflects the company’s passion and commitment to coffee.
Type of coffee used, origin
Kenco coffee beans are sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms, which gets its coffee beans from various parts of the world like Colombia, Ethiopia, Brazil, Peru, Vietnam, Costa Rica, and Indonesia. Kenco uses the finest high-quality Arabica (Coffea Arabica) and Robusta beans(Coffeacaniphora) enhanced by a deep-roasting process for an intense and bold taste for each of these products with hints and pieces of various other ingredients to give it its unique aroma and taste.
Kenco has 32 range of products available as instant coffee, roast, and ground coffee. For all its products, the coffee beans go through rigorous quality checks throughout their journey from roasting, blending, and packaging to ensure they get to consumers in perfect condition. Kenco’s instant coffee is more popular because they’re freeze-dried, locking in the flavor for a great round taste.
First, after fresh coffee beans get delivered, they are stored in huge silos. The beans are filtered down into large ovens where they get their characteristic coloring and are roasted at 2000C. They’re continuously stirred to ensure they are evenly roasted without burning. From there, they go into an industrial mill where they’re crushed into powder. The flavor is forced out in huge coffee machines by hot steam and pressure. The fresh coffee is heated until condensed into an extract before conveyed into the freezing hall where they’re frozen solid (-500C) and then broken up into granules. The granules are now placed in huge storage stacks for packaging in jars, with airtight seals.
