Ronnefeldt is bound by long tradition to one of the world’s greatest tea-producing countries, China.

History, production, and growth

Ronnefeldt is a German tea company founded by Johann Tobias Ronnefeldt, a self-employed importer in 1823. His son Carl Adolf took over in 1880. Under Carl and his son Rudolf’s aegis, the company began to specialize in trading only tea and soon, Ronnefeldt became a well-known brand of tea. The Ronnefeldt Limited Company was then registered in 1902.

In 1951, Ronnefeldt had a tea processing plant in Kurfürstenplatz in Bockenheim where it celebrated its 125th anniversary. Herwarth Westphal, the grandson of Carl, became a partner in 1962. In 1975, Frank Holzapfel joined Ronnefeldt working closely with Herwarth Westphal and Georg Lülmann.

In 1984, Frank Holzapfel became the sole owner of the company. He expanded the business and made Ronnefeldt the exclusive tea brand for four and five-star hotels and began exporting to Russia and Eastern Europe. In 2002, Frank’s son, Jan-Berend Holzapfel, joined the company and expanded the brand all the way to the United Arab Emirates. In 2005, Jan-Berend became General Manager and partner and focused on more expansion to new international markets.

In 2008, Jan-Berend took over Ronnefeldt from his father in 2012 and celebrated its 190th anniversary in 2013. In 2017, Ronnefeldt became the official tea partner of Forbes Travel Guide. Frank Holzapfel passed away in 2019 and was awarded the prestigious 64th Brillat Savarin Plague in recognition of his foresight, entrepreneurial vision and efforts in the culture of dining and tea.

Today, Ronnefeldt has set standards for tea-culture and service for hotels and careering businesses worldwide. And even after 190 years, Ronnefeldt has stuck with its old ways and tradition of using only the best quality leaves from the best tea garden in the world’s best growing areas. Now, Ronnefeldt has training programs such as TeaMaster®, TeaAcademy®, where it invests in developing service managers at the world’s best hotels.
